In-Person at KKBE & on Zoom
Claire P. Curtis is a Professor of Political Science at the College of Charleston. She is the author of Postapocalyptic Fiction and the Social Contract: “We’ll not go home again.” (Lexington, 2010). She is a professor of political science at the College of Charleston and is currently teaching a class on justice and climate fiction. She is also the co-chair of the newly created Green committee.
One of the challenges of the climate crisis are the many questions we might have about the conditions of living on this future earth. Climate fiction offers a way of spurring us to imagine the changes that might happen to the landscape and to how people might live. Join us for a conversation about how stories about a changing climate impact how we think about our obligations to the future.
Before the presentation, here are three short readings to spur your imagination, a PDF of a one-page chapter from Kim Stanley Robinson’s Ministry for the Future, and links to stories by Omar El-Akkad and Margaret Atwood.
- Time capsule found on the dead planet by Margaret Atwood
- Factory Air by Omar El Akkad
- Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson
